I know that technically this is not an album review but an EP review instead. I felt the need to do a write up on this for two reasons:
1- I have a thing for Too Close To Touch, I think they are a very good band.
2- It's a rarity when they release something.
Too Close To Touch are definitely an "Underexposed" band in my opinion and think they deserve more credit and popularity then they currently have. There is a lot of talent amongst these guys and so I was glad that they released this EP "out of the blue". This EP came as a surprise to everyone since there was no word that this would even be coming out up until a few days before its release.
The band currently only has two full length records out with the last one coming all they way back in September of 2016. Since then, they have only released a series of three single tracks. Like I said, I felt the need to review the EP cause music from them is a rarity.
The first song off this three track EP is titled "Hard to Love". This song is just like most of the other Too Close tracks and so it was comforting to hear that they still are going to focus on their current sound. One of the things that I really love about Too Close is Keaton Pierce's vocals. I think that his voice is so pretty and with his occasional screams, it makes for a really good combo. His amazing vocals are not only present on this first track but the whole EP in general.
The second track is "Casket" and this song is very pretty and isn't as hard hitting as some of their other ones. But yet it is another typical sounding Too Close track that just hits the head on the hammer. You can feel the power and the emotions behind this track and it is what I really enjoy about it.
The final track, "The Fear of Letting Go" is my favorite one off the EP for a few reasons. The first reason being that Keaton's vocal range is on full display in this track. The second reason is that this track really hits home with the lyrics. The final reason is that this track reminds me a lot of their three part series with "Burn" , "Leave You Lonely" and "Before I Cave In". That three song series talks a lot about the abrupt loss of someone that you care about. First comes the clarity, then the relapse and finally, the process of trying to leave it all behind. This new song, "The Fear of Letting Go" , I feel fits the theme of that series too. Not to mention, I believe that with this EP and the three part series Too Close put out back over the course of late 2017/ early 2018, I think these are six of Too Close's best tracks to date. This makes me really excited to see what 2019 potentially has in store of them.
While on the topic of the future, I am curious as to what's going to be coming from these guys. When looking at the EP title, at the end it says "Vol. 1". This makes me believe that hopefully the turn around on even more music from Too Close is sooner than we think...
