AR - Black Album - Weezer

This week has brought about yet another Weezer album. This marks Weezer's 13th album release with the first dating all the way back to 1994 with the release of the "Blue Album". It surprises me that Weezer has yet to run out of colors at this point but their latest release is being dubbed the "Black Album".

This has been an album that has been teased by the band for quite sometime now and has been of much conversation in the music world. Since Weezer's previous album, "Pacific Daydream" in 2017, the band has been in the spotlight because of their cover of "Africa" by Toto. The band then released the "Teal Album" which is a 10 song long cover album.

Going back to the topic of "Pacific Daydream" though, this release came with a lot of scrutiny from critics and Weezer fans a lot. Many Weezer fans are still craving the older sound of the band, they demand the band goes back to the days of the "Blue Album" and "Pinkerton" but the music world is taking another direction. This "other direction" is filled with more pop and computer generated sounds. This has been the road that Weezer has been going down that in my opinion, started with "Pacific Daydream". It is obvious that this is a path that Weezer is going to continue down based off the singles that were released off this "Black Album". These singles include: "High as a Kite" , "Living in L.A" , "Zombie Bastards" and "Can't Knock The Hustle".

The first of these singles that was released was "Can't Knock The Hustle" back in November. This was a song that at first I really did not like at all. Being a Weezer fan myself though, I really was trying to give the band the benefit of the doubt. The more that I listened to this track though, I started to like it and started to appreciate it more. I think of the things that really bothered me with this track was the music video that came along with it. This video included Fall Out Boy's very own Pete Wentz. While I am a huge fan of Wentz, this video was just weird and creeped me out. The video can be viewed here:

The past few Weezer albums have been very experimental. Weezer is one of those bands who is not afraid to try something new and once again they have proved that with this album. Fans will complain about it but there is no point in basically making the same songs over and over again.

In my own personal opinion I think that the new Weezer isn't bad at all. The album is fairly enjoyable. It has its good moments for sure. This is just one of those albums that you have to listen to a few times to get comfortable with it. My personal favorites off this album include Zombie Bastards , High as a Kite and California Snow.

Overall Score: 6.2/10
