April's Artist of the Month features post-hardcore band, Our Last Night.
Our Last Night reigns from New Hampshire and consists of brothers Trevor (vocals) and Matt Wentworth (vocals and guitar) and their childhood friends, Alex Woodrow (bass) and Timothy Molloy (drums).
The band's history is unlike any other that I know. From starting the band before pre-teen to now being adults, this is the crazy story of Our Last Night.
The group was founded in 2004 when Trevor , Matt and Alex wrote an EP titled , We've Been Holding Back. After releasing a few EP's and demos, the band ended up signing with Epitaph Records in 2007. It is important to note that Trevor was only 13 at the time and Trevor was even younger at only 10 years old. Under Epitaph , the group released their first studio album, in 2008, titled, The Ghosts Among Us. They then hit the road and went out on tour. Touring as a 13 year old is by no means easy and the guys in Our Last Night have said that by being out on tour at that age, it tremendously helped them grow and mature as people. Not only that, but by being on the road with people much older than them, they were taking notes on what and what not to do so when they reached that age they would be going down the right path.
This helped them when their contract with Epitaph was over. Being controlled and told how to sound was something that the band didn't necessarily like and they decided to not resign and go independent. The band now had no one weighing them down, no management, no label. The band has gone on to release numerous EP's and studio albums since then. Along with releasing what seems like hundreds of covers.
Their first few albums and EP's in my opinion, sound very much experimental. I can't really blame them since they were just high schoolers. For me, I can start to hear their current sound and feel in their albums Age of Ignorance and Oak Island around 2013. The band currently has a very post-hardcore feel with fast tempos, loud volume and heavy traces of bass. The band falls into a category with bands like A Day to Remember, Asking Alexandria, Sleeping with Sirens and Of Mice and Men.
The band really started to see an increase in traffic with the release of their EP, Oak Island in 2013. This seven song EP includes two of their biggest hits to-date in Same Old War and Sunrise. They then came back a year later and released an acoustic version of the EP too.
From there, the band went on to release their album Younger Dreams in 2015. After that they released my two favorite works, Selective Hearing in 2017 and just recently Let Light Overcome in March.
On Selective Hearing, amazing tracks like , Tongue Tied , Caught in the Storm and Ivory Tower can be found. For me personally, this is my favorite project that the band has released to date.
They just released Let Light Overcome back in March which features some of my favorite tracks from the band as well. These songs include: Demons , The Leap and Bury The Hatchet. Last week, they even just released the music video for Castle in the Sky. This album sets them up to do a lot of amazing things in the future.
Along the way in-between all the EP's and albums, the band LOVES to do covers and have even sort of become known as the "cover band" now. They have covered a variety of songs that includes anything from: Hotel California, Blank Space , Shape of You , HUMBLE , Nick Theme Songs and most recently , 7 Rings featuring Derek from State Champs.
Speaking of Derek DiScanio, State Champs is how I actually found out about Our Last Night in the first place. I went and saw State Champs on their Living Proof Tour back in March and State Champs brought along , Philidaelphia's Grayscale , The Dangerous Summer and Our Last Night. I originally listened to a few of Our Last Night's songs before the concert just to get familiar with their music and I thought it was alright. After the concert though, all I had blasting in the car on the way home was Our Last Night. The amount of energy and emotion that this band had while on stage was impressive. Many , if not all of their songs are amazing for live settings and the crowd really got into them. One of the other things that I loved about seeing these guys live was their bassist, Alex "Woody" Woodrow. This guy was jumping around, spinning his bass guitar around his neck, etc. You could see that he was up there living his best life doing what he loves.
These guys truly put their heart and soul into what they do. As previously mentioned, Our Last Night is forging their path on their own terms and are doing things their way. The only ones holding them back is themselves.
